An exciting city that offers something for everyone
One of the best things about Porto is that you can explore the city mostly on foot. Its small footprint allows you to explore the Old Town (a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996) and most of the city center with no frills. An intricate mesh of medieval streets stretches all the way from the Clérigos Tower, to the Old Sao Bento Railway Station (Yes! The one with the beautiful blue tiles or azulejos as we call them) down to the riverside neighborhood of Ribeira. On your way, you will find most of the main historical landmarks of this beautiful city.
Port wine, one of the world’s most famous fortified wines, has shaped a great deal of the city’s history, both politically and economically. So you should not miss crossing the bridge to the south bank of the Douro river, in Vila Nova de Gaia, and exploring a few of the historical Port wine lodges. Head to the tasting room and while sipping a glass of Port enjoy the most staggering scenic views over Porto and the river.
A true feast for architectural fans, Porto is home to two Pritzker Prize laureates (architecture’s equivalent to the Nobel prize) Alvaro Siza and Souto de Moura. It counts on its records with an amazing list of modernist and contemporary buildings to admire and visit. Namely the Serralves Contemporary Art Museum and Casa da Música. On the other hand, if you are more of a sports type of person, we suggest you take a surfing lesson at the beach in nearby Matosinhos or just rent a bike and explore the city. The list of things to experience in Porto is endless and caters to many different tastes.
