Sitting on top of a small granite islet, in the middle of the Tagus River,

lays an original piece of medieval military history: The Almourol Castle.
It is located in Tancos, a beautiful little village by the river, just a few kilometers drive from Tomar.

Its origins go back to the Pre-Roman times and throughout the centuries it was always considered a strategic point due to its geographical position.
In 1129, the first Portuguese king took this fortress from the Moors and handed it to the care of the Knights Templar. They were in charge of the defense line of the Tagus River and it was a vital asset in those ancient times of the “Reconquista”.

The staircase that takes you to the "Torre de Menagem” and the present layout, although it was reconstructed in the 19th century, still stands as a good example of Knights Templar’s military architecture and one of the most remarkable monuments of the period.

The Almourol Castle is also an enchanted place. There are several legends of princesses and their knights that became tales through the years.

The best part of going there is that the only way to reach the Castle is by boat. Don’t worry, just a small ride from the river bank and you can explore this mystical place.
